Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court Sends Update to Supreme Court (West Bengal SIR Hearing Update 2026)

The update regarding the progress of the voter roll revision was conveyed through a communication from the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court to the Supreme Court of India.

According to the information shared, 10.16 lakh objections and claims filed by individuals facing potential deletion from the electoral rolls have already been addressed during the SIR process.

This large-scale verification exercise is aimed at ensuring the accuracy of the voter list by reviewing claims, objections, and eligibility details of electors across the state.

Judicial Officers Working Round the Clock

To handle the massive volume of applications and objections, more than 500 judicial officers from West Bengal have been deployed as Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs).

Officials informed the court that these officers are working under intense pressure, often continuing the verification process overnight and even cancelling holidays and Sundays to complete the task within the stipulated timeline.

To further strengthen the process, around 200 additional judicial officers have been brought in from neighbouring states, including Odisha and Jharkhand.

Supreme Court Directs More Support for the SIR Process

While acknowledging the progress made so far, the Supreme Court of India emphasized the need for stronger logistical support.

The court instructed the Election Commission of India to provide adequate administrative and logistical resources to assist the officers responsible for verifying objections and claims.

The bench also stressed the importance of ensuring transparency and efficiency in the revision process.

Updated Voter Lists to Be Provided in Every District

Another key direction issued during the hearing was related to the accessibility of updated electoral records.

The court asked authorities to ensure that updated voter lists are made available in all districts of West Bengal, allowing citizens to verify their names and submit corrections if required.

Officials noted that the SIR exercise is crucial for maintaining accurate and reliable electoral rolls, which are essential for conducting fair elections.

What the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) Means (West Bengal SIR Hearing Update)

The Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls is a detailed verification exercise conducted to update voter lists by:

    • Reviewing claims and objections submitted by voters
    • Identifying duplicate or ineligible entries
    • Verifying the eligibility of registered electors
    • Ensuring accurate and updated electoral rolls before the upcoming elections

The large number of objections being processed reflects the scale of the ongoing revision across West Bengal.
