    • Partha Sarathi Das – Professor of Practice
    • Pratyusha Das – Professor-in-Charge of the B.R. Ambedkar Legal Aid Clinic

They explained the growing challenges of cybercrime and highlighted practical ways to protect oneself online.

    Community Outreach Before the Event

Student volunteers visited nearby neighbourhoods to distribute leaflets and personally invite residents, parents, and students to attend the awareness programme.

Their aim was to ensure that people understand the importance of cyber awareness in today’s digital environment, where smartphones and internet access have become common even among young students.

St. Xavier’s University Introduction of the Programme

The programme was initiated by student members of the Legal Aid Clinic:

    Online Safety and Digital Awareness

During the session, Soumyajit Raha interacted with students to assess their understanding of online risks. He explained how personal information, photos, and social media accounts can easily be misused if shared carelessly.

    Students were advised to:

    • Avoid sharing personal information online
    • Be cautious during video calls with unknown people
    • Verify online sellers before making purchases
    • Protect their social media accounts with strong password

Role of Parents in Digital Safety (St. Xavier’s University)

Speakers emphasized the important role of parents in monitoring children’s online activities.

Since smartphone usage increased significantly during online education, children are often exposed to digital platforms at an early age. Parents were advised to supervise online behaviour and ensure that children are not exposed to harmful or inappropriate content.

    Awareness About Cyber Fraud

The speakers also highlighted several common cyber fraud methods affecting citizens across India.

    Participants were warned about:

    • Fake online shopping websites
    • OTP fraud and banking scams
    • Suspicious links and phishing messages
    • Fraudulent phone calls pretending to be bank officials

People were encouraged to immediately report any suspicious transaction or digital fraud.

    Cyber Bullying and Online Harassment

Another important topic discussed was cyberbullying and online harassment, which can significantly affect mental health and personal safety.

Students were informed about how harmful online behaviour such as harassment, intimidation, or blackmail can be reported under Indian cyber laws.

    How to Report Cybercrime

The speakers also explained the official procedure for reporting cybercrime.

    Victims can file complaints through:

    • Local police stations
    • Dedicated cybercrime police stations
    • The Government of India’s official cybercrime reporting portal

Understanding these reporting mechanisms helps victims take quick action and prevents further damage.

Promoting Responsible Digital Behaviour of St. Xavier’s University

The Cyber Legal Awareness Programme successfully educated students and parents about safe internet practices and the legal protections available against cybercrime.

With increasing internet use among young people, initiatives like this play a crucial role in building digital awareness, encouraging responsible online behaviour, and strengthening cyber safety in society.

The organisers expressed hope that similar programmes will continue to empower communities with knowledge about digital rights and online protection.
