R. N. Ravi: The Government of India has appointed R. N. Ravi as the new Governor of West Bengal. He takes charge after the resignation of the previous Governor, C. V. Ananda Bose. With a long background in administration and national security, Ravi is considered one of the most experienced governors in the country.
Early Life and Education
R. N. Ravi, whose full name is Ravindra Narayan Ravi, was born in 1952 in Patna, Bihar. He studied Physics before joining the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1976. He was allotted to the Kerala cadre and started his career as a police officer there.
Career in Security and Intelligence
A large part of Ravi’s career was spent in India’s security and intelligence agencies. He worked with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and also held key positions in the Intelligence Bureau (IB).
Later, he became the Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee, which advises the government on national security matters. In 2018, he was appointed as the Deputy National Security Advisor of India, where he played an important role in strategic security discussions.
The central government also appointed him as the interlocutor for peace talks with Naga groups in Northeast India, where he helped facilitate dialogue aimed at resolving the long-standing insurgency issue.
Governor of Nagaland and Tamil Nadu
In 2019, Ravi was appointed as the Governor of Nagaland. Later, in 2021, he became the Governor of Tamil Nadu.
During his tenure in Tamil Nadu, he was often in the news due to political disagreements with the state government led by Chief Minister M. K. Stalin.
Political Controversies
Several controversies arose during his time as Tamil Nadu Governor. One major incident occurred when he refused to read the speech prepared by the state government in the Tamil Nadu Assembly and walked out of the session. This led to strong criticism from the ruling party and sparked a national debate about the role of governors in the Indian constitutional system.
There were also allegations that he delayed approval of several bills passed by the state assembly, which further increased tensions between the Raj Bhavan and the state government. The matter even reached the courts and became part of a wider constitutional discussion.
Another controversy emerged when Ravi raised the slogan “Jai Shri Ram” during a college event. Opposition parties questioned whether such slogans were appropriate for someone holding a constitutional post. Supporters, however, argued that the slogan is a religious expression and not necessarily political.
