NMC Weighs shift to percentage cutoff for NEET-UG:  A major change may be on the horizon for NEET-UG admissions. A proposal has been put forward suggesting a shift from a percentile-based eligibility criterion to a percentage-based system. The objective of this move is to enhance the quality of students entering medical education.

This proposal, submitted to the National Medical Commission (NMC), suggests that admissions to medical and dental colleges should be based on the percentage of marks secured in NEET-UG, rather than on the percentile ranking obtained in the examination.

Dr. Aruna Vanikar, former President of the NMC’s Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB), stated that this change aims to ensure that candidates possess at least the minimum requisite academic competence.

“Currently, eligibility is determined based on percentiles, wherein candidates qualify based on their comparative performance.”

A significant reform in India’s medical entrance system could be on the horizon. A new proposal submitted to the National Medical Commission suggests replacing the current percentile-based eligibility in NEET-UG with a percentage-based system. The move is aimed at improving the academic quality of students entering medical and dental colleges across the country.

What Is Changing in NEET-UG Admission Criteria? (NMC Weighs shift to percentage)

At present, NEET-UG eligibility is determined using a percentile system. This means candidates qualify based on their relative performance compared to others in the same exam.

However, under the proposed reform, eligibility would instead depend on the actual percentage of marks obtained. In simple terms, students would need to score a fixed minimum percentage rather than just outperform a certain percentage of candidates.

This shift is expected to introduce a more consistent and transparent benchmark for admission.

Why This Change Is Being Considered

The proposal has been backed by Dr. Aruna Vanikar, former president of the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) under NMC.

According to her, the current percentile-based system allows candidates with relatively low marks to qualify in some cases, depending on overall exam difficulty and performance trends. A percentage-based system, on the other hand, would ensure that all qualifying candidates meet a minimum academic standard.

This is seen as a step toward strengthening the foundation of medical education in India.

    Difference Between Percentile vs Percentage

    • Percentile System:
Qualification depends on how a candidate performs compared to others. Cut-offs vary each year.
    • Percentage System:
Qualification depends on the fixed marks secured by the candidate. Cut-offs remain more stable and predictable.

The proposed model could reduce fluctuations in eligibility and bring more clarity for aspirants

Impact on NEET Aspirants (NMC Weighs shift to percentage)

If implemented, this reform could significantly affect how students prepare for NEET-UG:

    • Students may need to aim for higher absolute scores rather than just staying above the cut-off percentile
    • Coaching strategies and preparation patterns could shift
    • Competition may become more focused on achieving strong fundamentals

While high scorers may benefit, those relying on lower percentile thresholds could face increased difficulty.

    What Happens Next?

The proposal is currently under consideration by the National Medical Commission. Any final decision will likely involve consultation with academic bodies, policymakers, and stakeholders in medical education.

As of now, no official confirmation has been issued regarding implementation. Students are advised to continue preparing as per the existing NEET-UG pattern until formal changes are announced.
