Speaking on the issue, a senior pharmacology expert from Kolkata Medical College clarified that there is no specific drug designed exclusively to cure Nipah virus infection.

Doctors do not have a single, targeted medicine that can eliminate the virus. Instead, treatment focuses on managing symptoms and complications caused by the infection.

How Is Nipah Virus Treated?

Medical experts explain that treatment for Nipah virus is supportive and symptom-based. This means:

• Antiviral medicines may be used to slow viral activity
• Antibiotics are prescribed only to manage secondary bacterial infections
• Treatment depends on how the virus affects different organs

Nipah virus can severely impact the lungs and the brain, leading to conditions such as pneumonia or encephalitis. Doctors aim to reduce inflammation and manage organ-related complications through available medications and intensive monitoring.

Why Intensive Care Is Often Required

One of the major concerns with Nipah virus infection is the rapid deterioration of a patient’s condition. In severe cases:

• Patients may require ICU care
• Ventilator support may be necessary
• Continuous oxygen support and close monitoring are often needed

4. Stay away from pigs and pig meat, as pigs can act as carriers
5. Wear a mask, especially in crowded or high-risk areas
