Massive Crackdown on Fake IRCTC Accounts

In a major move to improve transparency in railway ticket booking, the Indian government has removed more than 3 crore fake accounts from the IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) portal. The announcement was made by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during a session in Parliament.

The action is aimed at curbing ticket black marketing and illegal tout activities, which have long affected genuine passengers trying to book train tickets.

    Why Were These Accounts Removed?

According to the Railway Ministry, a large number of fake accounts were being used by agents and touts to manipulate the ticket booking system. These accounts often used automated tools or bots to book tickets in bulk, especially during Tatkal bookings, and later resell them at higher prices.

The removal of these accounts is expected to:

    • Improve ticket availability for genuine users
    • Reduce fraud and misuse of the IRCTC platform
    • Make the booking system more fair and transparent

Officials stated that this step ensures that real passengers get better access to tickets.

Key Highlights Announced by Railway Minister

During the Lok Sabha discussion, Ashwini Vaishnaw shared several important updates:

    1. Over 3 Crore Fake Accounts Deleted

The government has taken strict action to eliminate fraudulent users from the IRCTC platform.

    2. 75,000+ Special Trains Operated

To manage heavy passenger demand, especially during peak seasons, Indian Railways has run more than 75,000 special trains in the current financial year.

    3. Majority Seats in Affordable Categories

    • Around 78% of train seats are non-AC
    • Nearly 70% of coaches are general and sleeper classes

This ensures affordability for the majority of Indian passengers.

    4. Railway Safety Improved

The minister also highlighted that railway safety has improved significantly, with accidents reduced by nearly 90% due to focused efforts.

    Impact on Passengers

This move is expected to bring direct benefits to millions of railway users across India:

    • Easier booking during Tatkal and peak hours
    • Reduced the chances of ticket unavailability due to bots
    • More trust in the IRCTC system
    • Fair pricing without middlemen exploitation

Experts believe this could be one of the biggest clean-up operations in India’s online ticketing ecosystem.

Government’s Focus: Affordable & Accessible Travel

Ashwini Vaishnaw reiterated that the government’s priority is to provide:

    • Affordable travel options
    • Comfortable journey experience
    • Fair access to tickets for all passengers

With increased train operations and system reforms, Indian Railways aims to reduce overcrowding and improve overall service quality.

    What This Means Going Forward

The removal of fake accounts is just one part of a broader digital reform in Indian Railways. Going forward, more strict verification systems, AI monitoring, and anti-bot measures may be introduced to prevent such misuse.

Passengers can expect a cleaner, more efficient, and user-friendly ticket booking system in the coming months.
