Indian Railways Ticket Refund Rules Announced from April 1, 2026: Indian Railways has introduced updated train ticket cancellation and refund rules for 2026, bringing stricter deductions and a more streamlined refund process. These changes are important for passengers who frequently book confirmed tickets and want clarity on refund eligibility.
Indian Railways Ticket Cancellation Refund Rules (Applicable from April 1 to April 15, 2026)
Under the revised rules applicable between April 1 and April 15, 2026, the stipulated timeframes have been modified. Passengers who cancel their tickets more than 72 hours before the scheduled departure of the train will receive the maximum refund, after the deduction of a fixed cancellation charge. If a ticket is cancelled between 72 hours and 24 hours before the train’s departure, 25% of the fare will be deducted. For tickets cancelled between 24 hours and 8 hours before departure, 50% of the fare will be deducted. However, if a ticket is cancelled less than 8 hours prior to the train’s departure, no refund will be granted.
Key Change: Indian Railways Ticket Refund Depends on Cancellation Time
A major change relates to ticket cancellations. Confirmed tickets cancelled less than eight hours before the train’s departure will no longer be eligible for a refund. The aim of this measure is to reduce last-minute cancellations and improve seat availability for other passengers.
The biggest update is that refund amounts now depend strictly on how early you cancel your confirmed ticket before departure.
| Time Before Departure | Deduction Policy | Refund Conditions |
| More than 72 hours | Eligible For Maximum Refund | Only a flat cancellation fee charged per passenger |
| 72 hours to 24 hours | Standard Penalty Window | 25% of the fare (subject to the minimum charge) |
| Tickets cancelled between 24 and 8 hours before departure | Late Cancellation | 50% of the fare (subject to the minimum charge) |
| Less than 8 hours | Closed Window | No refund |
| Post-Departure Period | Closed Window | No refund |
