Kenya Floods Kill 81 Today: Officials reported on Sunday that flash floods across Kenya have claimed the lives of at least 81 people this month, as heavy rains continue to wreak havoc across large parts of the country. “Unfortunately, the total death toll has risen to 81,” National Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said in a statement.

“Flash floods have swept through several areas, leaving approximately 2,690 families homeless and causing extensive damage to infrastructure and property.”

Nyaga further noted that the capital, Nairobi, has been the hardest hit, recording 37 fatalities.

According to local media, officials on Friday night urged residents to evacuate several informal settlements located in the low-lying areas downstream from the Nairobi Dam. They warned that rising water levels posed a risk of the dam’s embankment breaching, potentially triggering a flood at any moment. Currently, the dam remains secure.

Severe flooding across Kenya has left at least 81 people dead and thousands displaced, as relentless rainfall continues to batter large parts of the country. Authorities have issued urgent warnings as the situation worsens, particularly in the capital city, Nairobi.

    Nairobi Among the Worst Hit

Nairobi has emerged as the epicenter of the crisis, with dozens of fatalities reported due to flash floods sweeping through residential areas. Roads have turned into fast-flowing streams, disrupting daily life and damaging homes and businesses.

Authorities warned residents living near the Nairobi dam to evacuate immediately after rising water levels raised fears of a possible breach. Although the dam has not collapsed, the risk remains high as rainfall continues.

Deaths Rise Across Regions (Kenya Floods Kill 81)

Beyond Nairobi, other parts of Kenya are also facing devastating impacts:

    • Two people drowned in floodwaters in Kiambu, a town near the capital
    • Landslides in western Kenya buried homes, killing at least two people
    • Several communities have been cut off due to damaged roads and infrastructure

Emergency services are working around the clock, but access to affected areas remains a challenge.

    Thousands Forced to Leave Homes

More than 2,600 families have been displaced as floodwaters engulf homes and settlements. Many residents have been forced to seek shelter in safer areas, often with limited access to food, clean water, and medical support.

Low-lying and informal settlements have been the most vulnerable, with poor drainage systems worsening the crisis.

    Government Response and Public Concerns

Authorities have urged citizens to exercise extreme caution, especially in flood-prone regions. Rescue operations and evacuation efforts are ongoing, but concerns are growing over preparedness and infrastructure.

Criticism has also emerged regarding urban planning and drainage systems in Nairobi. Residents and observers are questioning whether enough has been done to prevent such disasters, especially after previous promises of infrastructure improvements.

Climate Change a Growing Factor (Kenya Floods Kill 81)

Experts believe that climate change is playing a significant role in the increasing intensity of such weather events. In recent years, East Africa has experienced a rise in both extreme rainfall and prolonged droughts.

Scientists warn that these patterns are likely to continue, making it essential for governments to invest in climate-resilient infrastructure and disaster preparedness.

    What Lies Ahead

With more rain forecast in the coming days, the situation remains critical. Authorities are continuing to monitor water levels, especially around dams and rivers, and have advised people to stay alert.

    Residents are being urged to:

    • Avoid flood-prone areas
    • Follow evacuation instructions
    • Stay updated with official alerts
