UPI ATM withdrawal rules are changing from April 1: Effective April 1, 2026, several banks in India will implement changes to their ATM regulations. These changes include the introduction of UPI cash withdrawal facilities within the free transaction limit, as well as the launch of a QR-based cash withdrawal system to promote digital accessibility. Here is a look at the new updates issued by each bank.

In recent years, many people have stopped carrying ATM cards and instead rely on UPI for quick and easy cash withdrawals. However, a major change is coming that could impact how you withdraw money using UPI at ATMs.

Starting from April 1, new rules are expected to come into effect that may introduce transaction limits and additional charges for UPI-based ATM withdrawals.

UPI ATM withdrawal rules: What Is Changing?

Until now, withdrawing cash using UPI (cardless withdrawal via QR code) was often treated differently from regular ATM transactions. But under the new rule:

    • UPI ATM withdrawals will now be counted as regular ATM transactions
    • They will be included in your monthly free transaction limit
    • Once the free limit is crossed, charges will apply per transaction

This marks a significant shift in how digital withdrawals are treated.

    Extra Charges After Free Limit

    As per the updates:

    • Banks may charge ₹23 per transaction after exceeding the free limit
    • This applies to both:
      • Debit card withdrawals
      • UPI-based ATM withdrawals

So even if you are not using your ATM card, charges may still apply after a certain number of withdrawals.

    Free Transaction Limits

Banks already have limits on free ATM usage:

    • Metro Cities: 3 free transactions per month
    • Non-Metro Cities: 5 free transactions per month

    For example:

    • In banks like HDFC Bank, you can withdraw cash up to 5 times free per month
    • After that, every withdrawal (UPI or card) may incur charges

    Why This Change Matters

    This update is important because:

    • Many users depend on cardless ATM withdrawals via UPI
    • Earlier, these were often seen as separate from ATM limits
    • Now, both methods are being merged under the same limit system

This could lead to unexpected charges if users are not aware.

    How UPI ATM Withdrawal Works

    The process remains simple:

    1. Go to a UPI-enabled ATM
    2. Select the cardless withdrawal option
    3. Scan the QR code on the screen
    4. Approve the transaction in your UPI app
    5. Collect your cash

Even though the method is easy, the cost structure is changing.

Banks Already Announcing Changes (UPI ATM withdrawal rules)

Several banks have already indicated updates to their policies, including:

    • HDFC Bank
    • Punjab National Bank

Some banks are also planning to:

    • Reduce daily withdrawal limits for certain debit cards
    • Encourage digital transactions like UPI and net banking for large payments

    What You Should Do

    To avoid extra charges:

    • Track your monthly ATM withdrawal count
    • Use UPI or net banking for payments instead of cash
    • Avoid unnecessary small withdrawals
    • Check your bank’s updated rules regularly

    FAQs

Q1. Will UPI ATM withdrawals be free?

Only within the monthly free limit. After that, charges may apply.

Q2. What is the charge after the limit?

Around ₹23 per extra transaction (may vary by bank).

Q3. Is this rule applicable from April 1?

Yes, the new system is expected to be implemented from April 1.

Q4. Does this apply to all banks?

Major banks like HDFC and PNB have already indicated changes. Others may follow.

Q5. Can I still withdraw cash without a card?

Yes, but it will now be counted under ATM transaction limits.
