Previously, households could book the next LPG cylinder 21 days after the previous delivery. According to the latest directive, the waiting period has now been extended to 25 days.
This means that once a consumer receives a cylinder, they will have to wait at least 25 days before placing the next refill order through gas agencies or online booking platforms.
The government has introduced this rule mainly to prevent panic buying, black marketing, and hoarding of LPG cylinders.
Why the Government Took This Decision
According to government sources, many people were panicking due to the possibility of war. While the average person typically uses a cylinder every 55 days, it is suddenly becoming apparent that many are booking refills within 15 days. To prevent this black marketing and fabricated crisis, a 25-day lock-in period has been introduced.
Government sources indicate that global geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East, have led to concerns about energy supply chains.
Recently, tensions escalated due to the conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, which has affected global oil and gas transportation routes.
A major concern is the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important global oil trade routes. Around 20–25% of the world’s oil trade passes through this route, and a large portion of India’s oil and gas imports also depend on it.
Reports suggest that disruptions in this route could impact global fuel supplies. To avoid artificial shortages in the domestic market, the government has tightened LPG refill rules.

Authorities observed that the average household in India usually consumes one LPG cylinder in about 50–55 days.
However, recently many consumers started booking refills within just 15 days, fearing possible shortages due to the global situation.
Such panic booking can create artificial demand and supply pressure, which may lead to black marketing or hoarding. The new 25-day lock-in period is intended to control such practices.
LPG Cylinder Price Increased in March
Along with the rule change, cooking gas prices have also seen a hike due to rising international crude oil prices.
Latest price revisions include:
- Domestic LPG cylinder (14.2 kg): Price increased by ₹60
- Commercial LPG cylinder (19 kg): Price increased by ₹115
The new prices came into effect from March 7.
Government Plans to Maintain LPG Supply
To ensure an uninterrupted LPG supply across India, the government has taken several precautionary measures:
- Increase in Domestic Production
Indian refineries have been instructed to increase LPG production and prioritize domestic cooking gas supply.
- Exploring New Import Sources
India is considering importing LPG from several countries including:
- Algeria
- Australia
- Canada
- Norway
This diversification aims to reduce dependency on specific routes affected by geopolitical tensions.
- Maintaining Fuel Reserves
Government sources indicate that India currently has around 25 days of crude oil reserves, which helps maintain fuel stability in the domestic market.
Petrol and Diesel Prices Remain Stable
Despite rising LPG prices, there is no immediate plan to increase petrol or diesel prices. Authorities say India currently has adequate fuel reserves, allowing the government to maintain price stability for transportation fuels.
