Inspirational Tumpa Das:  At the age of 29, life was supposed to look very different for Tumpa Das from Baruipur. Like many women her age, she might have imagined a married life, a home filled with family, and the traditional symbols of marriage on her hands and forehead.

Instead, fate placed her in one of the most difficult roles society often fears to even discuss.

Today, Tumpa Das works at a cremation ground, performing the final rites for the dead. In a profession dominated by men for centuries, she stands as a rare and powerful example of courage and responsibility.

From 8 am to 8 pm, she handles everything from paperwork to operating the furnace and handing over the ashes to grieving families.

She has so far turned down two marriage proposals. None of them would let her continue with her job. And she won’t quit.

A Life Changed by Tragedy (Inspirational Tumpa Das)

Tumpa’s story took a drastic turn in 2014 when she was only 19 years old. The sudden death of her father shattered her family’s stability.

    Left behind were:

    • Her widowed mother
    • A younger sister
    • A younger brother

The family had no stable source of income. Tumpa tried working as a nursing aide, but the small earnings were barely enough to keep food on the table.

Faced with the harsh reality, she made a decision that few could imagine.

She chose to continue the work her father once did — working as a cremation ground attendant, helping conduct last rites.

    Breaking Social Barriers

In many parts of India, cremation work has traditionally been performed by men from specific communities. When Tumpa stepped into that role, she faced strong social criticism.

People questioned her choice and mocked her.

Many asked how a woman could work in a cremation ground and handle such emotionally difficult duties.

But the strongest test came from her personal life.

Tumpa once hoped to build a family of her own. However, when the family of the man she loved discovered that she worked at a cremation ground, they rejected the relationship. They told her the marriage could only happen if she left the job.

Tumpa refused. Her answer was simple and powerful. If she left the job, her family would go hungry.

A Decade of Strength (Inspirational Tumpa Das)

Tumpa picked up the bamboo staff used by cremation workers, and for the past 10 years, she has continued the work without turning back.

At the cremation ground, she performs duties that require both physical and emotional strength.

    Her responsibilities include:

    • Managing funeral pyres
    • Assisting families during the last rites
    • Maintaining order during late-night cremations
    • Handling difficult situations involving intoxicated visitors

Often she works late at night, when the rest of the town is asleep.

The Hardest Part of the Job

Among all the challenges she faces, one situation breaks her heart the most.

    Cremating the bodies of children.

Tumpa has admitted that those moments are the hardest to endure. Watching grieving families and carrying out the final rites of a child can be emotionally overwhelming.

At times, she wonders how life might have been if her own dreams had taken a different path.

A Small Salary, A Huge Responsibility

Despite the demanding work, Tumpa earns only a few thousand rupees a month.

But that small income has been enough to keep her family afloat.

With that money, she has managed to:

    • Support her mother
    • Help raise her siblings
    • Keep the household running

More importantly, she continues to perform a duty that ensures the dignity of people’s final journey.
